Brownsberg
For most visitors of our beautiful country the Brownsberg is the first real experience with our breathtaking rainforest. This, because the Brownsberg is the only nature reserve reachable over the Afobakka dirt-road, and where it is possible to be accommodated in moderate luxury.
The Brownsberg is located at a distance of 130km south of Paramaribo, between the Saramacca- and the Suriname- river, and the reserve is sized at 12000 acres. On a height of 500m ( above sea-level ) you will find the Mazaroni peak where you will have a view on part of the van Blommenstein ( Brokopondo ) lake and the top of the treeline of the Amazon rainforest present on the slope of the mountain.
The Mazaroni plateau provides you with the necessary information as it displays a map of the area, and detailed well-placed arrows lead you on hiking trails through the idyllic forest where cool refreshing waterfalls lie named the Irene- and the Leo falls, which in turn are supplied by the abundant creeks in the area.
Along the way you will be dazzled by the diversity of colors displayed by the hundreds of butterflies, approximately 300 bird types and the flowers of the Groenhart and the Purperhart trees. There is a great chance that you might stumble across deer, swine, monkey sorts or a rabbit only indigenous to the rainforest. The medicinal application of diverse plants and roots will be explained by the guide along the way as well.
