Brownsberg / Stone Island / Berg en Dal combi
For most visitors of our beautiful country the Brownsberg is the first real experience with our breathtaking rainforest. This, because the Brownsberg is the only nature reserve, accessible over the Afobakka dirt-road, and where it is possible to be accommodated in moderate luxury.
The Brownsberg is located at a distance of 130km south of Paramaribo, between the Saramacca- and the Suriname- river, and the reserve is sized at 12000 acres. On a height of 500m ( above sea-level ) you will find the Mazaroni peak where you will have a splendid view on part of the van Blommenstein ( Brokopondo ) lake and the top of the treeline of the Amazon rainforest abundantly present on the slope of the mountain.
The Mazaroni plateau provides you with the necessary information as it displays a map of the area, and detailed well-placed arrows lead you on hiking trails through the idyllic forest where cool refreshing waterfalls lie named the Irene- and the Leo falls, which in turn are fed by the abundant creeks in the area.
Upon return from the hike a tasteful lunch awaits you, where after the journey to Stone island is begun. This is a peninsula, in the van Blommenstein lake which offers you a breathtaking view over the lake with its characteristic tree trunks emerging from the deep below. The accommodations consist of lodges, of which a few are placed along the water line. Inside there are comfortable beds covered by mosquito nets.
After breakfast we board the dugout canoes to visit a few other islands, so that you can get a good idea of the enormous size of the lake. You will also be able to catch a few Peacock Bass or the infamous Piranha’s. In the meantime lunch has been prepared, and will await your return. When returned to the island, and having consumed lunch, you may explore the area, sunbathe, swim or play with the pets of the care taker.
The third day we head to Berg en Dal adventure center, where the day is spent by hiking, canoeing, and canopying across the resort. After this exhilarating day we travel back to Paramaribo over the Afobakka road, and you will surely have experienced an amazing adventure.
