    The van Blommenstein lake

The van Blommenstein lake is a man-made lake that claims an area of 1560km2 that is completely submerged under water at the foot of the Browns-mountain and other surrounding mountains. This area was submerged in the 60’s to provide the dam with enough force to create electric energy for the produce of aluminum from bauxite. Nowadays this energy is partly used by Paramaribo and its outskirts. Surreal are the boat-trips between the tree-tops emerging from the water, the star-filled skies and breath-taking nature. The surrounding rainforest houses lots of villages where the inhabitants still culturally live the way they did centuries ago.

A visit to the lake consists of laying in the hammock, swimming in the clear water, sun-bathing and/or fishing some peacock bass or piranha’s. You will furthermore enjoy the nature trails, where you will have the chance to encounter parrots, swine, squirrels and some species of rabbits, and the explanatory guidance of our guide along flora used for various medicinal purposes.

A known standard is also the nature hike to the Witie-creek and the trip through an old abandoned gold-mine.
